LIIDLII KUE/FORT SIMPSON - The Seven Spruce Golf Course saw the largest crowds of the year so far as 74 golfers participated in the sixth annual Canadian Zinc Open over the weekend.

In addition to being the largest tournament of the year it was also the biggest turnout in the event's history. Its previous high was set last year when 63 golfers took up their clubs to play.

"We are very impressed and very gratified by the friendly, warm welcome we get," said John Kearney, the president of Canadian Zinc Corporation.

The tournament's emphasis is on having fun and there was a positive atmosphere over the two days, he said. Kearney said he was pleased to see a cross section of community members attend including novice and advanced golfers men, women and children.

"There's great community support and it's right across the whole spectrum," he said.

Out of the 18 teams the paring of Shane Thompson, Steven Thompson, Paul Simon, Tyler Pilling and James Kearney emerged in first place with a finish of 130, 14 under par for 36 holes.

"It was just a whole team effort," said Shane.

At least one member of the team always had a good shot and everyone made their chips, he said. Getting two eagles helped the team keep their score low.

The team got an eagle on hole three during their second nine on Saturday and again at the same location on Sunday. The first eagle was thanks to a drive by Steven, a long second shot by James and a putt by Simon. The second time credit went to Steven followed by Shane and a finishing putt by Pilling.

The rest of the team's score was made up of 10 birdies, 2 bogies and a lot of pars. The team was saved from a third bogie by James who drained a lucky 30 foot putt on hole one on Saturday.

Shane, who's also the president of the Seven Spruce Golf Club, said he was pleased with the turnout. The club's members respect the company's sponsorship of the event and respond to the fact that Canadian Zinc brings more employees every year to compete, Shane said.

"They're a great corporate citizen," he said.

Second place in the tournament went to the team of John and Louisa Moreau, Steven Lenoir and Eric Menicoche at 131.

"We just got lucky," said Menicoche.

The team finished at five under par on the first day and eight under on the second by getting 13 birdies and 23 pars.

The team capitalized on Menicoche's long putts on holes one, nine, two and four, Louisa's short chips and putting and Lenoir's long drives.

"He put us in a lot of good spots," said John.

John characterized himself as the safe player who always made sure the team had a secure shot.

Third place at 133 went to Kele Antoine, T.G. Wilson, Arnold Hope and Felix Isiah.
