'A place for everyone'

INUVIK - Inuvik taxpayers will help pay for the homeless shelter's operations, at least for the next three months.

"There are so many different groups like Africans, Muslims, French, and people from Nova Scotia, Vancouver and within Canada. Getting all of them involved allows for community growth," said event co-ordinator Ashli-Lisa McCarthy.

As well as being a fun event, the fair sought to raise awareness about the community greenhouse,

"Many of the people that live in Inuvik aren't aware of the greenhouse because they are not members and they don't have a plot for them to tend, which defeats the purpose of a visit. This is exactly what we are trying to change; it is a place for everyone."

McCarthy is studying tourism at Algonquin College in Ottawa. She has been in town since May working for the greenhouse.

"This has been a great experience for my field of study and personal growth," said McCarthy.

Community members including parents, toddlers, teenagers and city officials took part in the fair.

McCarthy hopes more community members will become involved with the greenhouse as she said it is a great way to understand the process of growing your own produce and enjoying the harvest.
