Mikey McBryan, star of History Television's Ice Pilots NWT, a reality show shot in the North following the employees of Buffalo Air, was a guest speaker at the event and was also part of the school play.

"Without knowing anything about it I agreed to do it," said McBryan of his involvement in the assembly.

This year students performed a play in which Lupi the mascot was travelling around the world, but got stopped at Canada Customs on the way back. When he arrived in the school gym, he came with his own personal banana-mobile and McBryan as his personal pilot.

McBryan said working with the students was a nice change from his usual routine.

"It was awesome," said McBryan. "They're a lot easier than dealing with pilots."

The crew of the reality show were on hand to film the play, which may be featured in one of the upcoming episodes.

Two students were chosen to be the master of ceremonies at the rally for the event including Grade 7 student, Jessica Blake.

"When ever I finish a rally I feel fulfilment," said Blake.

"What we do with the older kids is make them leaders," said Liz Baile, assistant principal at Weledeh. She introduced the PBS program, which teaches kids about the importance of proper student behaviour, to the school in 2003.

McBryan admitted he usually isn't involved in school events.

"This was first time I was in a school since I graduated," he said.

"(It was) definitely out of my normal daily activates, we don't get a chance to leave the hanger much, so when we do it's almost a break."
