INUVIK - Tyra Cockney-Goose wasted no time letting her light shine at the Ingamo Hall Friendship Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The glowing little 10 year old took to the stage wearing a bright yellow blouse to sing her favourite song This Little Light of Mine.

But just singing the tune wasn't enough for this bold little youngster. She started a rhythmic clap and in short order the audience followed suit.

Tyra was among the dozen or so children who participated in this year's Muskrat Jamboree children's talent show.

Although she loves the song, she admitted it's the only one she knows off by heart. Since she's got a talent for spreading joy, Tyra figured she's be as good as anybody to perform the tune.

"I'm a happy person and I'm a good singer because I practise a lot," said Tyra, who also said she gets tons of encouragement from her mom.

Tyra's effort earned her first place in her category, and a box of cartoon magnets as a prize, which excited her. She's proud of her performance, but she's unsure whether she'll pursue a stage career, she said.

Eight-year-olds Christine Day and Delanie Arey made quite a splash with their version of You Are My Sunshine. It was a easy choice for Christine because she said her nana used to sing it to her. The girls were hanging out Sunday afternoon, when a half hour before the event started they decided to pair up for the duo.

Both said their moms are forever complimenting their singing talents. They agree they sing equally as well. The couple notched a second place finish.

The Ingamo Hall Friendship Centre crowd witnessed a brother and sister drum dancing routine performed by Tyren and Lesli Kisoun.

All the performers were awarded prizes for their efforts.

Event organizer Francene Ross had nothing but praise for "all the very talented contestants."

"They had the guts to get up and try," she said. "They worked together. They did a great job and they deserve a lot of credit."
