Easter break adventures

INUVIK - Myja Semmler's most memorable spring break moment didn't come from watching her brother play hockey in Edmonton nor by getting a load of chocolate from the Easter Bunny.

"I threw up on the plane with my family and someone cleaned it up," the beaming five-year-old declared immediately after being asked the question.

Myja proudly recalled her messy incident on the afternoon of April 8, while attending spring camp with her friends at the Midnight Sun Complex.

Just two days before that she said she was en route from Edmonton to Inuvik with her parents and brother as well as his hockey team when disaster struck. Myja admitted it wasn't that bad because she didn't eat much during the day.

"I don't really know why it happened," she said.

After such an adventurous family trip, which included a visit to West Edmonton Mall's Galaxyland amusement park, the spirited youngster was as happy as could be. She admitted needing a break from the rigours of kindergarten life.

"There's nothing I really like about school," she said. "But I like homework because I love colouring."

But Myja's vacation included another scary moment.

Being away for Easter, she wondered if the Easter Bunny would make a visit to her house. Her father quickly put an end to Myja's worries.

"My dad told the Easter Bunny to come back on a different day because I wasn't there on that day. So I got it (chocolate) today. It was cool how my dad saw the Easter Bunny."

Oddly, she didn't bother asking her dad what the bunny looked like.

On that point, her friend Krish Sharma, 7, who had been standing beside her throughout the interview, quickly interjected.

"The Easter Bunny is always different colours, like white and blue," he said.

Besides attending day camp, Krish enjoyed a family trip to Tuktoyaktuk on Easter Sunday with his mom, brother and grandparents. The weather was fantastic he said, and they were able to see the pingos and share a lovely meal together.

He, too, was grateful for some time away from school.

Cody Wainman, 5, another camp participant, had no problem at all occupying himself during his break, whether colouring or playing Mario Kart on his Wii.

He admitted to missing a few things about school: gym, French class and music class.

Oh yes, and singing the national anthem every morning.

"I like O Canada," he said.

On Monday spring break ended and schools in Inuvik reopened.
