Aklavik RCMP arrested Eddie Greenland, 46, in connection to a sexual assault investigation that began on Feb. 23.The investigation was in response to a complaint by a female Aklavik resident.

Greenland is charged with sexual assault with a weapon, sexual assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats. He made his first appearance in Inuvik Territorial Court March 1 for a show cause hearing, where Crown prosecutor John Cliffe agreed Greenland be released back to Aklavik on a cash deposit bail of $7,500. Greenland did not enter a plea during the hearing and is expected back in court to speak to the charges March 31 in Aklavik.

Greenland has served multiple terms on Aklavik's hamlet council, re-elected in December 2009 with the second-most votes of any councillor candidate.

Aklavik Mayor Billy Storr and senior administrative officer Evelyn Storr could not be reached for comment Tuesday, but it appears no official decisions have yet been made regarding Greenland's council position.

A council meeting was scheduled for March 2 in Aklavik's hamlet chambers.
