MITTIMATALIK/POND INLET - A member of the Iqaluit RCMP has been charged with two counts of assault after he was arrested in Pond Inlet on March 14.

Const. Eric Ootoovak was arrested after RCMP responded to a disturbance call at a home in the community, according to an RCMP press release.

Ootoovak spent the night in jail before being released, said RCMP Sgt. Jimmy Akavak.

"Alcohol was involved; it was definitely a factor," Akavak said.

The release stated Ootoovak was on extended leave from the RCMP at the time of the incident. Akavak said that before Ootoovak went on leave he had been a member of the force in Iqaluit.

Ootoovak is set to appear in court in Pond Inlet on June 1. A code of conduct investigation under the RCMP Act is underway.
