Priest's trailer broken into again

ACHO DENE KOE/FORT LIARD - Some members of the St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church parish in Fort Liard are dismayed by a recent break-in.

Two community members were found inside the priest's trailer on Feb. 28. The building is located on Mission Drive.

A male, age 20, and a female, age 18, are accused of breaking the front door to gain entrance to the trailer, said Cpl. Wanita Minty, of the Fort Liard RCMP detachment.

Two individuals, also accused of drinking inside the residence, were discovered on that Sunday morning when a member of the parish came to check on the trailer.

Both suspects have been charged with mischief and being unlawfully in a dwelling house.

Although there was little damage value-wise to the trailer, many members of the parish were shocked by the incident, said Eva Hope, a member of the congregation.

"A lot of people were upset," said Hope.

"Again there's no respect."

Last May both St. Raphael Church and the trailer were broken into.

In that case six youth ranging between the ages of 14 to 17 were charged with break and enter to commit mischief.

The most recent break-in resulted in damage to the trailer's door frame and necessitated a cleaning of the trailer's floors and carpets. Mass is held in the trailer when Father Wes Satanski visits the community and at other times congregation members hold rosary services there. Members like to keep the building clean and well maintained, said Hope.

The congregation is currently raising money to build a new church.

It's discouraging to have break-ins like this when the community is trying to move forward, Hope said.
