For the fun of it

Amanda Jerome's legs were a tad shaky and her face wore a nervous smile as she let go of the curling rock during her team's early morning game at the Oilmen's Bonspiel on Saturday afternoon.
She was facing off against probably one of the best curling squads in Inuvik, team Northwind 2, which includes the likes of Donovan Arey, Melvin Sittichinli, Kim Wainman and Richard Ross. But her rock sailed right between two tightly placed guards, where she promptly scored a double take-out. Not bad for someone who hasn't curled in about a decade. Then again, two of her teammates that afternoon, Jimmy Arey and Tegwan Jones, had not played for at least that long. To make matters worse, earlier that morning they had to scramble to find a replacement skip, Angus Edwards from Aklavik, who happened to fit the role well. The game remained at a respectable score until he had to leave to play in the IRC Cup hockey tournament. The trio, who work for Inuvialuit Development Corporation, decided to give last weekend's annual bonspiel a shot just for the fun of it. Running from Friday to Sunday, it drew 11 teams from around the Delta region and two from Calgary. The winning team turned out to be Mackenzie Pipeline team, which included O.D. Hansen, Richard Gordon, Katelyn Storr and Bob Reid. But though it boasted plenty of high end curlers, the bonspiel was also about socializing and having fun. That's why Jerome decided to come. "I just wanted to get together with everyone and have some fun and see how good of a curler I can be," she said. Even though she said she was pleasantly surprised by some of her shots, Jerome admitted to being a little rusty, especially when it came to sweeping. Arey had no problem sharing news of the team's blowout earlier in the morning. "We lost 12-0, but that's OK," he said with a laugh. "I'm having a lot of fun." Northwind 2's Kim Wainman thought the IDC team curled well, all things considered. Though she and her teammates were gunning to make the finals, she also let loose a bit and soaked up the atmosphere. "It's a great weekend with the (IRC Cup tournament) happening, too," said Wainman, who has been playing on and off for 15 years. "There's lots of good teams and different people are coming and we all get to know each other." Jerome, Arey and Jones said they're more than willing to sign up next year.
