Close call for hunter

ARVIAT - An Arviat hunter who had been missing on the land was found early Monday morning, Dec. 21, by ground search-and-rescue personnel about 90 km from his community.

Royden Aggark, 31, had left Arviat the previous weekend to do some caribou hunting with a few friends about 100 km from Arviat.

Aggark decided to head for home on Wednesday, Dec. 16, and when he still hadn't arrived in Arviat by the weekend, a search was initiated, which included a Hercules aircraft out of Winnipeg.

Although an accomplished hunter, Aggark had little in the way of supplies with him when his machine broke down.

Reports from the community suggest Aggark had only a tarp for shelter when he was found, and he had run out of fuel for his Coleman stove.
