Incumbent mayor fends off challengers
Paul Bickford Northern News Services Published Monday, December 21, 2009
Council results:
Flamand, a 59-year-old plumbing contractor, has been mayor for two years since Enterprise changed political status from settlement to hamlet.
"I was just happy to get re-elected and I'm hoping to be a better mayor in the next two years," he said, noting he now has two years of experience in the position. "I think I'm more prepared now to handle the next two years."
The mayor and council will be sworn in on Jan. 4.
Flamand said he has a "fantastic" new council, pointing in particular to 19-year-old Mathew Gauthier.
"It will be good to have a young person's perspective," the mayor said.
Flamand said he believes the election results confirm the hamlet government is on the right path.
However, he said he would like to keep Enterprise residents better informed about what he and council are doing.
"I think that's the right thing to do," he said.
Michael St. Amour, who finished second in the mayoral race, said the election results seem to indicate people are happy with the way things are going in Enterprise.
St. Amour and John Leskiw II - the other challenger for mayor - were both elected to council.
"I'm happy I got as many votes as I did and we'll work with this council to improve things," St. Amour said.
However, St. Amour, the community's fire chief, said he will continue to fight for a budget increase for the community's fire department for upkeep and replacement of equipment.
However, Flamand said the main concern with the fire department is getting volunteer firefighters.
"Money has never really been a problem," he said.
Flamand was elected to a new two-year term.
The top three finishers among council candidates will serve two years, while the next three finishers will serve one year.
