Elizabeth McMillan Northern News Services Published Friday, December 18, 2009
Robert Paul MacMullen was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday but didn't enter the courtroom when a sheriff called his name. Police arrested the 47-year-old after they found multiple printed images of child pornography in a Beck Court apartment in October. The Crown asked for a warrant for his arrest. Underage drunk driver loses licence for 18 months An 18 year old who isn't old enough to drink lost his licence for a year and a half and was fined $1,400 Tuesday. The man pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in territorial court. His blood alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit. He had no previous criminal record. "I'm just glad I was discovered," he said in court. "I've learned from it." The man was pulled over while driving along Old Airport Road in the early morning hours of Oct. 3. Crown prosecutor Jill Andrews said he was driving slowly, swerving and, at one point, drove up on the curb. Judge Bernadette Schmaltz said "too many people are killed. Too many people are hurt … it's an easy crime to stop." The man will also have to pay a victims of crime surcharge of $210. Plea expected from man accused of possession of stolen property A man charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 and dangerous driving in relation to a stolen city truck last July is scheduled to enter pleas on Tuesday, Dec. 22. Akeeshoo Papatsie, 20, appeared in territorial court on Dec. 15. Seventeen-year-old Ashley McClean died in a rollover in the same city vehicle on Old Airport Road in the early morning hours of July 23, but police say Papatsie was not in the vehicle at the time. Papatsie is facing a long list of charges spanning several months, including numerous breaches of court orders. He barely looked up while sitting in the prisoner's box at the front of the courtroom. He was jailed after a warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to appear in court on Nov. 3. Child porn case delayed due to computer analysis A man who faces two child pornography-related charges has yet to make a plea. Harold Jerome Wedgerfield faces one count of possessing child pornography and one count of distributing child pornography. He was scheduled to plea on Dec. 15 but his case has been pushed back another month. "The Crown is still waiting for the computer analysis to be done in Edmonton," said Crown prosecutor Jill Andrews. She said the report should be complete in four to six weeks. Wedgerfield is due back in court Jan. 19. Wedgerfield was charged in connection with "Project Salvo." More than 50 people from across Canada were arrested in March after Canada's largest child pornography bust. Wedgerfield is the only NWT resident still facing charges. The Crown stayed charges against a second man from the NWT.
