Spooky-style treats

REPULSE BAY - A group of students at Tusarvik School in Repulse Bay took part in a special project this past month that supplied some fun items for Halloween, and also helped satisfy a number of sweet teeth at the school.

The students used baking class to create some wacky and incredibly tasty Halloween cupcakes.

Tusarvik's baking teacher, Stephanie Courtorielle, said high school students in Grade 10 to Grade 12 earned academic credits while having fun making the cupcakes as part of their career and technological studies program.

She said the students began learning how to bake in the class this past August.

"This is actually their second time decorating Halloween items and they do a really good job," said Courtorielle.

"There was really no special reason the students decided to go with the cupcakes for Halloween.

"They were just an easy, fun treat to make and the students got quite creative with their efforts.

"There were some great looking cupcakes when they were finished."

The students may decide to expand their program in the future and use the school casketeria to create such classic Halloween stomach pleasers as boo-ghetti and vampire stake sandwiches.

There's even talk of a dessert menu with cake and whipped scream, as well as booberry pie.

The sky's the limit, as an alien theme could also be employed, but only if the Tusarvik students can find a frying saucer.

Courtorielle said most of the students in the cooking class are male.

She said they enjoy the program and like getting the chance to learn how to bake different things.

"We've done everything from cupcakes to muffins and cookies.

"They've seemed to enjoy making each item, especially the eating part once they're done.

"The boys are actually very good at reading recipes and taking instructions.

"Most of them are always ready to go and enthusiastic over whatever we're taking on each day."
