Kolola trial to begin in Iqaluit in February
Kassina Ryder Northern News Services Published Thursday, November 19, 2009
Pingoatuk Kolola is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Scott, who was shot after responding to a police call in Kimmirut in Nov. 2007. Jury selection is expected to begin on Feb. 19, 2010 in Kimmirut. If an impartial jury cannot be selected there, jury selection will take place in other unspecified Nunavut communities. Kolola is scheduled to appear in court with his lawyer, Andy Mahar, on Dec. 10 to discuss jury selection matters. Three weeks have been set aside for the trial. Akeego Ikkidluak, Kimmirut's senior administrative officer, said she doesn't believe it will be possible to select impartial jurors from the community. Approximately 415 people live in Kimmirut, few of whom are not related to Kolola, she said. "In my opinion, I think it would be better if no one comes from the community," she said. "We're all related, one way or another." Ikkidluak said there is insufficient space in the community to hold a jury trial, which is why it was selected to take place in Iqaluit. The trial itself is expected to begin during the last week of February, but the date will depend on when a jury can be selected.
