Murder trial jurors may come from Kimmirut
Kassina Ryder Northern News Services Published Monday, November 23, 2009
"In my opinion, I think it would be better if no one comes from the community," said Akeego Ikkidluak. "We're all related, one way or another." Pingoatuk Kolola is charged with first degree murder in the death of Const. Douglas Scott, who was shot after responding to a call for police in Kimmirut in November 2007. The trial will take place in Iqaluit. Jury selection is expected to begin on Feb. 19, 2010 in Kimmirut, a community of nearly 400 people. If an impartial jury cannot be selected there, jury selection will take place in other unspecified Nunavut communities. Ikkidluak said there is not enough space in the community to hold a jury trial, which is why it will take place in Nunavut's capital city. Kolola is scheduled to appear in court with his lawyer Andy Mahar on Dec. 10 to discuss jury selection matters. Three weeks have been set aside for the trial. The trial is expected to begin during the last week of February, but the date will depend on when a jury can be selected.
