KIMMIRUT/LAKE HARBOUR - A 13-year-old girl fired a shot in the air next to an RCMP house late Thursday evening, according to RCMP.

"She went to the door, got the member's attention and left," said Sgt. Jimmy Akavak. The girl then went and picked up a long rifle, returned to the RCMP home and fired one shot into the air. The RCMP member took cover in his home, according to police, and the youth escaped on foot.

Bylaw officers and the public helped RCMP members find the young woman near Qaqalik School and she was taken into custody. She appears in court in Iqaluit on Oct. 19.
