Arrests made after rash of vehicle break-ins

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Two men have been arrested for a string of vehicle break-ins that occurred around Yellowknife over the past two weeks.

Stuart Komak, 20, Bobby Kaotalak, 23, and a 23-year-old were each charged Aug. 29 with four counts of possession of stolen property, four counts of theft, two of mischief, and one count of breach of probation.

Police nabbed the pair after receiving a call reporting two men going through vehicles parked on 54 Street.

RCMP Const. Kathy Law said the two have been linked to vehicle break-ins on Con Road, Gitzel Street and Bourque Crescent, but are possibly involved in several similar thefts reported in other areas around the city over past weeks.

"We don't know exactly how many of the vandalisms or break and entries ... were done by these two individuals," she said.

Law added the existing charges relate to eight vehicles.

Items stolen in similar thefts include money, wallets, identification, an iPod, a digital camera and a laptop bag. In many cases, the vehicles' doors had been left unlocked with the items in plain view inside.

Law said the RCMP does not have a cash value on items stolen, but police are reminding Yellowknifers to keep their vehicles locked and valuables safely secured.

Such incidents, residents are reminded by police, are dubbed "crimes of opportunity" for a reason and a little precaution can go a long way in diminishing the likelihood of it happening.
