SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A woman in her 60s was sexually assaulted Friday after a man entered her Range Lake home.

She was taken to hospital but her injuries were not life-threatening.

RCMP Const. Kathy Law said the incident happened in the late afternoon or early evening.

"It is very unusual," she said of the attack.

Law said there was no weapon involved and the entry didn't appear to be forced.

She wouldn't say if the intruder was known to the victim and didn't have any more information on the circumstances of the entry.

Police said the victim described the intruder as a Caucasian man between 30 and 40, with short, light-coloured hair. He was around six feet tall and approximately 200 pounds, and spoke with an East Coast accent.

Law said police continue to investigate but don't have any suspects, and are asking for the public's assistance.

Law encouraged people to lock their doors even when they are at home and not to hesitate to talk to people through closed doors if they don't know the person. She also said people should lock their windows and keep lights on.
