SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A Yellowknife man charged in the nationwide "Project Salvo" child porn investigation appeared in territorial court Tuesday.

Harold Jerome Wedgerfield faces one count of possessing child pornography and one count of distributing child pornography. He is one of two NWT men charged in connection to the RCMP investigation into Internet-facilitated child sexual abuse.

The investigation resulted in 50 arrests across the country, with charges of sexual assault, sexual interference and possessing, making and distributing child pornography.

It is dubbed the largest investigation of its kind by police.

Wedgerfield appeared in court wearing a dark blue and teal jacket and a beige golf shirt. He is heavyset with a grey, pointed goatee and close-cropped grey hair.

He remained silent and showed no emotion as Crown lawyer Glen Boyd told the court the Crown office was still waiting on further information before deciding whether to prosecute by summary conviction or by indictment.

An indictment conviction would entail up to 10 years in jail for the distribution charge and five years for the possession charge.

Wedgerfield is not in custody. He is to appear in court again Oct. 13, at which time the Crown will make its election on how to proceed. The other NWT man charged in connection to the investigation, Ernie Gabriel Bouvier, is set to appear in court on Sept. 30 in Hay River to enter his plea.

Man charged in rollover makes first appearance

The 20-year-old Yellowknife man charged in relation to the July 23 crash that killed 17-year-old Ashley McClean made his first court appearance Tuesday.

Akeeshoo Papatsie faces one charge of dangerous driving and one charge of possession of stolen property valued over $5,000 - relating to a city truck.

Papatsie did not have a lawyer. When Judge Bernadette Schmaltz asked what he wanted to do in court that day, he responded: "I have no idea ... I just want it over and done with."

The matter was adjourned to Oct. 20 to allow Papatsie to seek a lawyer.

A City of Yellowknife truck was stolen and crashed on Old Airport Road at approximately 1:30 a.m. on July 23. McClean was driving the vehicle when it rolled over. Police said she was the only one in the vehicle at the time.

A young offender was also identified as a suspect by police but his name cannot be released due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Drug trafficking case goes to Supreme Court

A Yellowknife man has pleaded not guilty to trafficking crack cocaine.

Justin Delorme was charged after RCMP searched a Northland Trailer Park residence May 30. At the time, police located two ounces of crack cocaine, Canadian currency and drug paraphernalia. Police also searched an individual and found an additional seven pieces of crack cocaine.

Delorme will be tried by judge in NWT Supreme Court. No date has been set.
