NWT - Residents of six NWT municipalities – those covered by the Cities, Towns and Villages Act – will be going to the polls on Oct. 19.

Nominations closed on Sept. 14 in five of those communities – Hay River, Fort Smith, Yellowknife, Norman Wells and Inuvik.

In Fort Simpson, nominations for village council have been extended to Sept. 21 since too few candidates stepped forward, although two people have been nominated for mayor.

David Kravitz of the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) said it appears the number of candidates is above average this year based on lists the department received as of last week from Inuvik, Norman Wells and Yellowknife.

"It looks to me there is a lot of interest," said Kravitz, the chief municipal electoral officer and the manager of community governance.

There will be no acclamations for mayor. In all, 15 candidates are running for the top post in the six communities.

Incumbent mayors are running in Yellowknife, Inuvik and Fort Simpson, while new mayors will be elected in Hay River, Fort Smith and Norman Wells since the incumbents are not seeking re-election.

In all, there are 75 candidates running to become councillors, and that number will grow when nominations close in Fort Simpson.
