Going Miles workshop an inspiration

Friends, here in the Sahtu we were recently treated to a truly extraordinary travelling show called Going Miles, an inspirational youth-oriented tour-de-force, spearheaded by actor and role model Dakota House, of the late North of 60. This workshop/event was organized by our local justice committee staff member Jamie Forsey here in Radilih Koe'/Fort Good Hope.

It took place over the weekend of June 19 and reached it's climax with the National Aboriginal Day celebrations. Community members were treated to a few days of workshops to help our young people come to terms with the variety of problems of being young these days, what with the temptations of drugs and alcohol.

One particular move of note I really appreciated was for the justice committee to see to re-instating an alcohol-free time for this.

As for the events in question, clearly the town's favourite in terms of entertainment came in the form of world champion hoop dancer Dallas Arcand, who did his spins and turns with a total of 20 hoops.

He even made it a point to ask the local Dene drummers to back him up with a crowd favourite for one of his routines, a re-creation of the medicine wheel.

With heads still reeling from all of this rockin' we were treated to a mesmerizing splendour from First Nations hypnotist Scott Ward who had a group of people up on our low-riser stage doing all of the funny antics people wouldn't normally do, much to the delight of friends and relatives.

He had one young man convinced he was pregnant and giving birth to twins, no less! The youth, in particular, were spell-bound by Darren Brule of Redd Nation fame with hip hop rappin' at its best.

People were even signed up on the spot to do a video, of a song called Jump, which can now be seen on YouTube.

Well, I must say that this weekend of Going Miles, which went on from here to Deline, was well rounded off with nightly feasting and cook-outs, making this one of this summer's memorable events.

Mahsi Cho, Jaimie and justice for all!
