SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A 20-year-old man is facing dangerous driving charges relating to events leading up to a crash that killed 17-year-old Ashley McClean on July 23.

Akeeshoo Papatsie of Yellowknife has also been charged with possessing stolen property valued at more than $5,000.

"The vehicle was being driven erratically throughout the evening," said Sgt. Larry O'Brien of the Yellowknife RCMP.

He said three people were involved in the incident that led to the charge against Papatsie.

O'Brien said police found alcohol to be a factor in the night's events, but would not elaborate. A City of Yellowknife truck was stolen and crashed on Old Airport Road at approximately 1:30 a.m.

McClean was driving when the truck rolled over. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

O'Brien said she was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

He said the other suspect is a young offender, but would offer no other information.

Papatsie will appear in court on Sept. 22.
