RANKIN INLET/WHITEHORSE - A pair of young cadets from Rankin Inlet made the best of every minute they spent at the Whitehorse Cadet Summer Training Centre in the Yukon this past month.

Floyd Kappi, 13, was making his first trip to cadet summer camp and enjoyed meeting kids his own age from many different areas across the North and British Columbia.

He said the camp was a lot of fun and he hopes to go back again soon.

"We did a lot of camping and I enjoyed that the most," said Kappi.

"I shoot lots home in Rankin, so I did pretty good at camp with the air rifle."

Kappi is in Grade 9 this year and also enjoys going biking and playing hockey.

He said there was a lot of team spirit at the camp and he felt very comfortable among the other cadets.

"I really enjoyed our final parade because there were a lot of people watching and I knew Nellie Ussak of Rankin was there watching too."

Karen Irkotee, 12, was attending the Whitehorse Cadet Summer Training Centre for the second time.

The Grade 7 student put in such a strong showing this year in the general program, she took home the Most Improved Cadet award.

Irkotee said she always enjoys swimming, whether it's at the cadet camp or home in Rankin.

She said she also enjoys spending time with her friends and has made many new ones during the past two years at camp.

"I keep in touch with some of them on Facebook and stuff," said Irkotee.

"I had a lot of fun at camp this year, especially when I got the chance to go horseback riding.

"That was, definitely, my favourite part of camp this summer.

"I really like marching and being a cadet, especially when we get a chance to visit other places away from home."
