SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Police have confirmed the 17-year-old girl killed in a single vehicle crash early Thursday morning on Old Airport Road was Ashley McLean of Yellowknife.

McLean was pronounced dead at the scene after a City of Yellowknife truck rolled near the bottle depot on Old Airport Road.

The truck was heading northbound toward the airport at approximately 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Jessie Graham said McLean often came to her house to hang out with her younger sister. She said McLean cared dearly about her friends.

"She was very funny, very bubbly and really nice to everyone," Graham said. "She was a good person all around. She was always really polite, a very happy girl."

Close friend Samantha Janes said McLean was well-liked and a very loyal and caring friend who loved skateboarding, biking and meeting new people

"She would just talk to anyone even if she didn't know them," Janes said.

A Facebook group titled Yellowknife's Guardian Angel was started after the incident, inviting friends to post their favourite memories and photos of McLean.

A 20-year-old man, who RCMP say was the second occupant of the vehicle, left the scene of the accident, but he was detained by police later that day. Const. Kathy Law said no charges had been laid as of Friday morning. She added that the investigation is still ongoing.

Law also said police are investigating a possible third person involved in the incident. The police didn't specify how the third individualmight have been involved.

Graham said the third occupant jumped out of the pickup truck's bed at a red light and went to McDonald's to call for medical attention.

A McDonald's manager confirmed a young man came to the restaurant and asked for an ambulance prior to the rollover on Old Airport Road.

A City of Yellowknife employee confirmed a truck had been stolen from the city's fleet Thursday morning, but would not give the location from where it was taken. Details on speed, alcohol involvement, and whether McLean and the other occupant were wearing seatbelts were still unknown as of press deadline.
