No word on Bachman concert ticket refunds

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Randy Bachman ticket holders continue to wait and wonder if they'll get their money back after the show was cancelled last minute due to dismal ticket sales.

Concert organizer Garth Mackie pulled the plug days before the event, scheduled for July 10, after selling only 400 tickets, well below the projected ticket sales. Ticket holders searching for refunds were unable to contact Mackie for almost a week after the cancellation.

Yellowknifer corresponded with Mackie via e-mail this week about the lack of contact with ticket holders. He is currently at work at one of the territory's mines and isn't expected back until July 28.

"I am currently in the process of answering e-mails from concerned ticket purchasers and once I'm out from the mine I can begin to reverse the process of the enormous amount of work that goes into putting on an event such as this," he wrote in an e-mail response a week and a half after initial contact. "I have been involved in a number of concert productions in the past and have never had to cancel, obviously people are wondering what's going on and I can assure you that each and every one of the e-mails I receive will be answered. People however need to be patient."

Yellowknifer asked whether there will be refunds and Mackie did not answer the first time and has yet to respond to the same question a second time. He did say in a second e-mail he didn't understand why people didn't buy tickets.

"I've done shows in the past with less of an advertising presence and never had to cancel, so I'm at a loss of words to explain why people weren't buying tickets like crazy to see a Canadian music legend," he wrote. "I only hope this will make people realize that a lot is on the line for promoters and everyone else involved in putting on these shows and people need to show their support and buy their tickets once they go on sale."

An e-mail obtained by Yellowknifer sent to a ticket holder from Mackie says to be patient, but does not say anything about ticket refunds.

Ticket holder Catherine Pellerin said she received the same e-mail from Mackie without any mention of refunds and isn't holding her breath on getting her money back.

"Who knows what's going to happen," she said. "I think he's going to have a tough time promoting any events in this town."
