SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - One Old Town resident is furious after vandals left a spray-painted graduation message on the side of her home.

Black spray paint reads "Grad '09" with a heart shape and the letter H.

"Congratulations on graduating, but do you have to make a bold statement like that on my wall? If you want to remember your graduation, take pictures," said Paivi Williams.

She said she has lived at the home in Old Town for 10 years. In that time, she said vandalism has never been a problem "to this extent" in the past.

"I have no idea how to get it off," said Williams. A yield sign nearby, on Lessard Drive, was also spray painted with black.

Williams said a Sir John Franklin High School student held a grad party on Morrison Drive Friday night. She said her daughter spotted the spray paint early Saturday morning.

Williams said she suspects it was done by Sir John students, but admits she has no proof that it wasn't someone from a different school.

She said she has contacted the RCMP and is hoping the person responsible will be found or come forward.

"I'd rather the culprit clean it up," said Williams.

"Take some responsibility. You're supposed to be adults now."

She said she heard from a friend that the YK1 school board has a crew assigned to clean up after the grads. A spokesperson at Sir John Franklin High School, who did not want to be named, said there was no such clean-up crew.

Andre Corbeil, assistant to the superintendent with YK Education district No. 1, said there is no evidence to prove this act of vandalism was committed by Sir John or YK1 students.
