SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A nationwide recall by the RCMP of Tasers, or conductive energy weapons, will leave RCMP officers in the NWT with only three of the weapons.

The removal of the Tasers include the 39 M26 model that RCMP in the NWT currently use, confirmed Sgt. Sylvie Tremblay with the RCMP's national press office.

The M26 CEW's will be removed from active service so that each weapon can be tested.

"It's happening across the country," said Tremblay from her office in Ottawa.

The territory's police force will be left with a total of three CEWs of the X26 model.

Tremblay said currently the RCMP is working on a strategy to address any shortages that may be caused by the weapons recall.

The Taser recall began with British Columbia, which ordered 128 of its Tasers be tested.

Tests of such weapons used by B.C. police forces, corrections staff and sheriffs showed 80 per cent did not operate properly and 90 per cent did not produce enough of the expected electrical output.

The RCMP stated in a press release that it will be returning those Tasers known to be functioning properly.
