Thumbs-up for golf club washrooms

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Washrooms at the Yellowknife Golf Club scored a hole in one this week after a group calling itself the Powder Room ranked them the best in the NWT.

The Powder Room is an online support group for people suffering from overactive bladders. Last year, the group started ranking washrooms in Canada by province and territory based on feedback to their website.

The goal was to devise a road map for cross-Canada travellers with a need for frequent washroom breaks so they could consult it when nature inevitably calls.

"For people with overactive bladders this is a great map to have," said Erin Bodley, a Powder Room spokesperson.

The washrooms are ranked based on accessibility, location, cleanliness and maintenance, line-ups and overall decor.

This is the second year the group issued its rankings for the best and worst washrooms in Canada. The 61-year-old Yellowknife Golf Club - about seven km from the city centre and a short distance from Highway 3 - was the only nominee for the territory, but Bodley said she would like to see more next year so visitors making the long drive up to the NWT can weigh their options before heading onto the highway.

She said all those selected for the best washroom honour receive a plaque.

Gordon Brayton, general manager of the golf club, said while he was aware the Powder Room was compiling the map he had no idea the club had received the number-one rating. Nonetheless, he wasn't surprised the club scored so well.

He said staff in the clubhouse work hard to keep the washrooms spotless. He added the woman's washroom is well-stocked with perfumes, lotions and hand soaps donated by Shoppers Drug Mart.

When asked about the quality of the toilet paper used, he said, "top of the line two-ply, baby."

Brayton said the washrooms at the club are open to public, although he wondered what sort of traffic the Powder Room rating would generate.

"We don't want a line-up or anything," he joked. "I guess the pressure is on."

When Yellowknifer stopped by Wednesday, the smell of cinnamon could be noticed by the washroom doors, and the urinals in the men's washroom were filled with ice.

"We make sure we put lots of ice in the urinals," said Rita Gaudet, the clubhouse manager. "It keeps down the smell."
