Swine flu hits Yk

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - One Yellowknife resident and four people from Nunavut are sick with swine flu, according to territorial departments of Health and Social Services.

All five cases, diagnosed late last week, have been mild - the Yellowknife resident recovered without hospitalization or medication, Dr. Kami Kandola, acting chief medical health officer, said Saturday.

Though three of the Nunavut cases were admitted to Stanton Territorial Hospital's children's ward, the Nunavut health authority said all three are also recovering.

More confirmed cases of swine flu are likely in Yellowknife, according to Kandola.

"We only have one lab confirmed case (in the NWT)," she said. "But just from investigating into the case, we have evidence that it had been transferred to other family members, so we have evidence to believe that it is being transferred locally.

"Anyone now that has influenza-like illness, we advise them to self-isolate at home for seven days and if they have any concerns they can contact the tele-health line," said Kandola. "(We advise them) not to go to work, not to go to school, not to go to daycare, even if they have mild symptoms. If they have moderate to severe symptoms they can go to their health care provider."

More than 1,000 cases of swine flu, also known as H1N1, have been diagnosed in Canada.
