ARVIAT - The largest number of new bikes ever presented as awards to Arviat elementary students were handed out during year-end ceremonies earlier this month.

A total of 16 students at Levi Angmak Elementary School received the bikes for maintaining a 95 per cent or better attendance rate during the past school year.

Principal Bob Wells said the community answered the call to acknowledge the achievements of the young students, and the new bikes will be a visual reminder of the importance of attending school on a regular basis.

He said the donations show Arviat's ongoing sense of generosity in supporting local youth.

"Staff members and I would really like to express our gratitude to the Hamlet of Arviat, Eskimo Point Lumber Supply, Northern store, Padlei Coop, Leonard and Associates, Panainaaq, Northern Transportation Company Ltd., First Air and our own SAO, Elwood Lynel, for their generous donations," said Wells.

"Receiving these bikes meant a great deal to our young students."

Students to receive new bikes for their attendance were Justin Kuksuk, Lydia Kaviok, Ruth Kaviok, Luke Kanayok, Belina Komak, David Kinak, Ralph Uluadluak, Melvin Ahmak, Holly Ann Uluadluak, Minnie Seowee, Isaiah Curley, Patterk Kablutsiak, Ester Nutarasungnik, Annie Kritaqliluk, Ocean Kidlapik, Bertha Eetak and Meeka Koomuk.

Wells said in addition to their sterling attendance records, the students were all-star award recipients for doing something good in school.

He said it's hard to describe exactly how excited the kids were while receiving the bikes.

"When you saw the smiles on their faces as they accepted the bikes, it really was quite moving. We received a phenomenal outpouring of support from the community to help us commend these students for their desire to succeed and a job well done.

"It was a wonderful close to our year at Levi Angmak Elementary School. My staff and I heartily congratulate these students."
