SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A collision between a car and a city public works truck at the intersection of highways 3 and 4 left two injured Friday morning.

Police received a call shortly before 11 a.m. about a multiple vehicle accident at the notorious intersection.

Police and medical units responded to the scene, blocking off traffic on Highway 4 at the Niven Gate intersection.

Traffic was diverted onto Niven Gate Road while emergency personnel dealt with the accident. The city vehicle straddled the yellow line on Highway 4, facing Highway 3 with its front end smashed.

The other vehicle, a maroon Chevy Impala, was about 45 metres away down the hill toward the legislative assembly, with the front end on the driver's side smashed in and both airbags deployed.

The driver of the Impala, an older man, was taken away on a stretcher after medical respondents put a neck and back brace on him. Emergency personnel worked on the female driver of the city vehicle before she was taken away on a stretcher.

Two additional occupants in the city truck received medical attention but were not taken to hospital.

Both drivers suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital, according to a press release issued by the RCMP Friday afternoon.
