Herb Mathisen Northern News Services Published Friday, June 12, 2009
"I don't know if he was unconscious at any time," said Const. Kathy Law, adding the man was breathing and had a pulse.
"The victim was conscious when I got to him. I observed a head injury, some bleeding from the head."
Law said the victim is "probably in his early 40s."
She said the victim was turned over to paramedics, but she did not know the extent of his injuries Tuesday afternoon.
Law said she had no information on whether a weapon was used in the assault, adding investigators were looking into the incident. She said the suspect believed to have committed the assault is an adult male.
"We do have some leads and we are following up on those at the moment," she said on Tuesday afternoon.
On Wednesday, Law said the victim had been released from hospital and there hadn't been any charges laid yet. She said the victim had been unco-operative with the RCMP and did not provide a statement.
Three police vehicles and two ambulances were parked outside the 50 Street entrance to Centre Square Mall, around 1:25 p.m on Tuesday afternoon. An RCMP officer interviewed a woman following the incident, while mall staff washed blood off the sidewalk.
The emergency response brought many downtown pedestrians to a standstill on 50 Street, as crowds formed, watching the events transpire and speculating what happened.
Several residents told Yellowknifer a man named Brian was knocked out. One man said he had heard the victim was punched a couple times and kicked. However, no one Yellowknifer spoke to said they had witnessed the incident.
Later on Tuesday evening - just after 6 p.m. - two men were involved in another altercation on 50 Street.
A Northern News Services employee witnessed the attack. According to his account, two men were fighting in front of Centre Square Mall. One of the men went down on his hands and knees after receiving a punch to head. Once down, the other man proceeded to kick him in the head before walking away.
A blue vehicle parked near the curb at the time of the attack drove away from the scene while witnesses ran to assist the injured individual.
Medical personnel were once again called to the scene.
