Thrasher managed a best shot of 8.97 metres, one centimetre better than Yellowknife's Austin Smith. Thrasher said he was hoping to do well, but didn't expect to do this well.

"It feels really good to win," he said.

Thrasher was hoping to compete he javelin as well, but he wasn't old enough. He also competed in discus and the 100-metre dash events, but said shot put was his best event.

"I didn't do too good in the discus," he said.

Thrasher said he planned to show off his first-place ribbon when he got home.

It seemed the shot put was the event of choice for the visitors from the Delta as a couple of more first-place finishes were on the cards. Chelsea Elias won the bantam girls shot put with a toss of 7.87 m, while her teammate, Kanelsa Noksama, won the midget girls shot put with a throw of 8.95 m. Brian Drake, one of the school's coaches, said all of the kids performed beyond expectations.

"It's a big improvement over last year," he said. "We had the three kids come first in the shot put, but we also had a couple of our distance runners come second in races and another come in third in a distance event."The school brought a mostly junior-high level team, something Drake said will be a good building block for years to come, but he said the kids who did well this year won't be under any pressure to repeat in 2010.

"We had kids from last year's team finish first or second back then and they came back and did the same this year," he said. "I think with the training we do up in Inuvik, we have a solid team. They work together and support each other. They're all friends in school and outside of it, so when they come here, they have that confidence to get them to the next level and a possible podium finish."
