Cleaning up the city's streets
Katherine Roth Northern News Services Published Wednesday, June 10, 2009
During the first Wednesday of each month, people from the company will be seen on 50 Street picking up trash to help beautify the city. "We are really into the community," Mackenzie said of the volunteers at BHP Billiton. "We want to make it a cleaner place and a safer place, and we thought this would be a good way to do that." At first, the group had planned to clean up the Niven Lake Trail area, but after going down there they realized it was already very clean, so they moved downtown. Mackenzie said no matter what, volunteers will be out each month until the street is clean. "Rain, shine, snow or wind, we'll be out here picking up." Adopt-A-Street is a co-operative program between the city's Community Services Department and residents of the city. Groups who register commit to one year of maintaining a street to help remove litter while improving the overall look of Yellowknife.
