SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Yellowknife RCMP say a drug bust on Highway 3 last week will go a long way to reduce the amount of cocaine on city streets.

Acting on a tip from the public, the RCMP seized a half-kilogram of cocaine from a pickup truck headed toward Yellowknife May 20.

An undisclosed amount of cash was seized in addition to the 470 grams of crack cocaine and 30 grams of powder cocaine - the equivalent of 5,000 individual doses, according to RCMP.

"Yellowknife is becoming a central point of distribution," said RCMP Sgt. Wayne Norris.

Two Yellowknife residents have been jointly charged in the bust. Alan Taylor, 40, and Joanne Glenn, 39, are both facing a charge of trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

A court date for neither accused had been set at press deadline.

Norris said the truck was apprehended in the area of Boundary Creek, about 60 km from Yellowknife, coming north from Edmonton.

The arrests were made by the RCMP "G" division Gang and Organized Crime Unit as well as the Drug Section.

The 2008 Dodge diesel pickup truck stopped on the highway was seized and could be subject to forfeiture as it was being used to transport the drugs, said Norris.
