UQSUQTUUQ/GJOA HAVEN - Grade 5 student Nessa Sallerina said her favourite part of Smoking Sucks Day at Quqshuun Ilihakvik in Gjoa Haven was getting to see pig's lungs -- even though they freaked her out "just a little."

The annual event, which has been taking place at the school for the past three years, had students rotating through each classroom May 8 to take part in different activities, such as poster making and pictures, and examining pig's lungs, so students could see what lungs actually look like.

Teacher Rob Lavoie said although he co-ordinated the event, it was the efforts of the entire school that made the day a success.

"I think one of the main things that made it a real success was each teacher put on a presentation in their classroom that they shared with all of the students," Lavoie said. "So each student got to go thorough a presentation in each classroom."

He said the event began after students from the junior high school attended conferences through the Alberta Lung Association's BLAST program in Yellowknife and Iqaluit four years ago. The students learned about the dangers of smoking and used their knowledge to help out with Gjoa Haven's Smoking Sucks Day when they returned to the community.

A poster contest was held at this year's event and the Department of Health and Social Services donated prizes.

Grade 2 student Jordan Takkiiuq said he drew a picture showing the effects of smoking on the body.

"I did a person that has yellow fingers, a hole in his throat and black lungs," Takkiiuq said.

He said he enjoyed the day because he likes to draw.

"It was good, because I like drawing and colouring."

Sallerina also drew a picture, but hers demonstrated the peer pressure associated with smoking.

"They were outside and the person was giving the cigarette to the other person," Sallerina said.
