SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Charles McGee, former Yellowknife lawyer and convicted pedophile, was absent from territorial court on Tuesday, as was his Edmonton-based lawyer Robert Davidson.

Davidson "was going to try to get an agent to appear on his behalf," said Crown prosecutor Janice Walsh.

McGee, charged with possession of child pornography and breach of probation, was scheduled to select whether he'll be tried by judge and jury or judge alone but the matter was adjourned to June 9 by Judge Bernadette Schmaltz.

A warrant for McGee's arrest will be enforced if neither he nor his lawyer appear in court on June 9.

'Stunting' driver nets $1,400 fine

A Yellowknife man who was arrested after being caught stunt driving at two separate intersections in the city was fined $1,400 in territorial court on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old man pleaded guilty to driving with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.

RCMP saw him "stunting" in a white pick-up truck on April 7 at roughly 10 p.m., according to Crown prosecutor John Noseworthy. Police stopped him near YK Motors and noticed he seemed intoxicated, said Noseworthy.

The man "had trouble producing his documents," said Noseworthy, and "stated he had two beers at the Gold Range bar."

The man was observed staggering left and right and smelled of alcohol. He was taken to the RCMP detachment and was found to have a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.

Defence lawyer Michael Gannon said the man felt "rather silly about this," and added he had no prior criminal record.

Judge Bernadette Schmaltz called the man "incredibly irresponsible."

"You're incredibly lucky the police saw you and stopped you before something worse happened," she said.

In addition to the $1,400 fine, he was fined a surcharge of $210 and prohibited from driving for a year.

Animal abuser now facing sex assault charge

Former Taloyoak resident Joseph Poodlat has been charged in Yellowknife with sexual assault.

Crown and defence lawyers asked for more time to review the case, which was adjourned to June 9.

Poodlat, who has more than a dozen violent offences on his record, was convicted in 2005 of an animal cruelty charge of injuring an animal, after he tortured his neighbour's female dog in Taloyoak with a screwdriver, hammer and caribou antler.
