Premier's affair complaint awaits decision

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - The investigation into whether Premier Floyd Roland was in conflict of interest for his intimate relationship with a legislative assembly clerk is still underway, and a decision could be weeks away.

On Tuesday, Gerald Gerrand, the NWT's conflict of interest commissioner, said he recently received all the documentation he needs to make his decision.

He said Roland's lawyer filed written submissions with him, which he then made available to the six regular MLAs who originally filed the complaint.

Gerrand said the MLAs were given a chance to file their responses to the submission before he evaluates the complaint.

"Five of the members responded in writing two weeks ago," he said.

"The sixth member filed five or six days ago."

Gerrand said he will now pore through the submissions and make a decision as to whether Roland was in conflict.

"I hope to be able to get this done in weeks rather than months," he said.

On Feb. 24, Gerrand received a complaint from six regular MLAs who had concerns with the relationship between Roland and the clerk.

The contention was the clerk had sat in on closed-door regular MLA committee meetings, where sensitive information could have been passed on to the premier.

The six MLAs named as complainants are Glen Abernethy, Wendy Bisaro, Bob Bromley, Jane Groenewegen, David Krutko and Dave Ramsay.

On Feb. 6, Roland denied anything from the meetings passed between himself and the clerk.
