Four arrested in weekend drug busts

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Four people are facing charges of drug possession and possession for the purpose of trafficking, following a string of arrests last weekend.

"Basically they all came from tips from the public," said RCMP Sgt. Larry O'Brien.

The first incident took place in the downtown area on April 24 when a man on 50 Street was arrested after one ounce of marijuana, a large amount of Canadian currency and "other drug paraphernalia" were seized, according to an RCMP press release.

No exact amount of money or description of paraphernalia were given. The man arrested is facing one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

On Saturday, a vehicle matching a description given to police was found outside a downtown apartment building. All occupants were detained and searched. One man was subsequently charged with one count of possession after he was found to have one ounce of marijuana.

On Saturday evening, RCMP entered a downtown apartment after receiving an anonymous tip and obtaining a search warrant. Police seized "marijuana, ecstasy, a rifle, as well as other drug paraphernalia," according to the release. A man and woman were arrested at the scene and are both facing charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

"At this time we can't say if (the incidents) are connected or not," said O'Brien, adding the investigation is ongoing.

O'Brien said three drug-related seizures over the weekend do not necessarily mean there is a boom in the drug trade or that police are suddenly paying more attention to the issue. He said it just means the RCMP was able to get the information and evidence it needed to quickly proceed with arrests and that it happened to occur in short succession.

"Drugs are an issue in any community," he said.
