Trapper's liquor licence suspended for violating rules
Andrew Rankin Northern News Services Published Thrusday, May 14, 2009
The suspension, which will take effect from 10 a.m. On May 28 to 10 a.m. on May 30, was handed down at a board hearing held in late April in Inuvik. The bar must also pay a $500 fine.
Don Kindt, chair of the licensing board, said a local RCMP officer lodged the charge on Jan. 24 after finding a man drunk and unsupervised at the bar. The establishment was found in violation of Section 92 of the Territorial Liquor Act, which sets out three conditions that must be followed with an intoxicated patron. The person can't have access to alcohol and must be under close supervision while waiting for transportation from a taxi or another designated driver. Until last October, when the act was changed, it was against the law for a drinking establishment to house an intoxicated patron under any circumstances. The change was made in part, said Kindt, to avoid the possibility of people freezing to death. The board dismissed another charge against the trapper of serving liquor to an intoxicated person-based on a lack of evidence. Kindt said since the bar came under new management there's only "been little bit of history" with the board, citing one previous violation under a section of the act that no longer exists. When handing down penalties, the board considers previous infractions. He said Adams admitted fault and co-operated at the hearing. Adams could not be reached for comment. |
