On patrol

EUREKA - Forty-four Ski-Doos and 549 jerry cans of fuel later, and Operation Nunalivut comes to a close.

Rangers from all three territories participated in the Arctic sovereignty operation this year.

Rangers built qamutiik to be used during the patrol in Eureka before the first groups took off on April 4.

The first member of each unit carried the Canadian flag while the last member carried the flag of the patrol unit so aircraft could identify the patrols from the air.

Jaypootie Aliqatuqtuq from Qikiqtarjuaq has been a ranger for about 16 years and said this was his first trip to Eureka. His job was to help provide patrolling rangers with the equipment they needed to carry out the mission.

"I've been preparing gas, staying behind, setting up food for flights, fixing snowmobiles if I have to and repairing qamutiik and the equipment they have out there," Aliqatuqtuq said. "It's been lots of fun."

The rangers returned to the Fort Eureka military base on Ellesmere Island on April 17.
