PANGNIRTUNG - The RCMP has charged a 15-year-old with arson following a fire at the Pangnirtung Inuit Co-op on Thursday.

RCMP said the fire started in a garbage can in the loading area, and the fire destroyed the Co-op's loading dock. High flames could be seen from across town at the fire's peak.

The town's fire brigade managed to put the fire out, but not until the fire's heat and smoke damaged the store's back stock room and a great deal of merchandise.

Manager Brad Amirault said the loading dock would have to be completely rebuilt and the stock room would need repairs

The store opened again the next day, offering discounts on its recently arrived selection of spring and summer clothing which now smelled of smoke.
