SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Former cabinet minister Henry Zoe will once again find himself in court next month.

Zoe is facing a sexual assault charge and is scheduled to appear in territorial court in Yellowknife on May 5.

Henry Zoe: Twice convicted of assault

The charge stems from an early evening incident on Feb. 20 in a downtown Yellowknife apartment.

Police were notified of the incident by the alleged victim later.

"The victim came and reported it to the detachment after the fact," said Const. Kathy Law, with the RCMP G Division in Yellowknife.

Law said Zoe was located and arrested a few days later and held in custody, until being released on a promise to appear in court.

"I can advise that they were known to each other," said Law, of Zoe and the complainant.

She said due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, that was the extent of the details she could provide.

Law said Zoe was released on conditions, including a prohibition from having any contact with the complainant, from possessing or consuming alcohol and he must remain in the Northwest Territories or Alberta.

Zoe is no stranger to the courts. He has twice been convicted of assault, including once for spousal assault in 1994, while serving as the MLA of North Slave - now known as Monfwi.

In April 2005, after regaining a seat in the legislative assembly, he was convicted of resisting arrest and stepped down as MLA seven weeks later. He ran for the seat again in 2007, but was defeated by current education minister Jackson Lafferty.
