Northern News Services
Published Monday, April 6, 2009

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Judges were thoroughly impressed with what they saw of News/North at the Better Newspaper Competition last month.

They presented News/North with a blue ribbon in its circulation category, signifying general excellence.

The national judges also had plenty of complimentary things to say about Opportunities North, a 96-page comprehensive overview of Northern industries. They ranked it tops in the best special section category.

"The amount and depth of copy generated was incredible," the judges wrote of Opportunities North. "Great use of graphics chosen to accompany the photographs and copy. The paper had a clean, easy-to-follow layout."

Other Northern News Services publications fared well at the competition, sponsored by the Canadian Community Newspaper Association.

Editor Roxanna Thompson garnered a first place for the Deh Cho Drum for best sports photo.

Yellowknifer was granted a blue ribbon for general excellence, placed second for best local editorial and finished third in the best headline writing category and third in environmental writing.

Darrell Greer's contributions to Nunavut News/North earned him the columnist-of-the-year award.

Greer also earned a second place for best environmental writing in Kivalliq News.
