SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Two soccer teams from Deh Gah School strengthened their skills over the weekend while competing in the Junior Super Soccer tournament in Yellowknife.

Both the Deh Gah Eagles U-12 boys and girls' teams competed in the B division of their age category. The tournament took place from April 23 to 26.

"They did good for three weeks of practice," said Jonas Landry, the coach for the boys' team.

The seven male players tied two games and lost three of their matches during round-robin play. In their first game against Elizabeth Mackenzie Elementary School from Behchoko, the Eagles lost 6-3.

Despite also losing their second game 4-2 against Range Lake, a Yellowknife team, Landry considered the effort to be the Eagles' best performance.

Range Lake "played against another team and they won by seven and eight points," the coach said of the Yellowknife team's strong performance.

Limiting Range Lake to four goals was an accomplishment for the team, said Landry. Rudy Landry and Tookie McLeod scored the Eagles' two goals.

The Eagles went on to tie Yellowknife teams Mildred Hall 1-1, and Allain St. Cyr 2-2. The Fort Providence players lost their final game 2-0 to the Weledeh Gold team.

Over the weekend the junior athletes demonstrated their strengths in passing and teamwork, said Landry. Axell Bouvier, who was named most valuable player twice, was one of the team's strongest players.

Bouvier didn't use body contact against his opponents and was a good team player, said Landry.

"He was playing fair," the Eagles coach told Deh Cho Drum.

Bouvier, 11, said he enjoys dekeing out other players and getting the ball in the net. He also practises to get ready for games.

"I do drills like passing, kicking and running," Bouvier said.

Teammate Rudy Landry also enjoyed the tournament. Rudy said his favorite parts of the big event were just having fun and "getting out of town."

Eight athletes that formed a U-12 girls' team also represented Fort Providence.

Coached by Charlene Bonnetrouge and Violet Landry, the girls tied a game 1-1 against Mildred Hall but lost 3-2 to Chief Jimmy Bruneau School and 6-2 to Yellowknife's Weledeh School.

Advancing to the finals, the girls were defeated by an Inuvik team 5-1.

"They had fun and they played well together," said Lois Philipp, the principal of Deh Gah School.
