Jewelry theft at Old Town business

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - Police are on the hunt for a thief or thieves after a weekend break-in at an Old Town fine crafts store where a number of pieces of unique jewelry were stolen.

The owner of Idumea Fine Crafts reported the theft at around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday. Police believe the break-in occurred sometime between 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

"The front door was kicked in," said RCMP Const. Kathy Law.

"They broke the light bulb at the front door too," she said, adding the broken light bulb would have made it difficult for any passersby to identify the culprit.

An undisclosed amount of cash and seven distinct pieces of custom-made jewelry were taken from the store located on Bretzlaff Drive, each worth between $95 and $400.

The store sells handcrafts, including earrings, necklaces and belt buckles - many with a South American flavour.

Yellowknife residents are asked to keep their eyes out for suspicious activity and broken lights at businesses. RCMP also ask the public to report anyone attempting to sell unusual jewelry pieces to the Yellowknife detachment or Crime Stoppers.
