Police seize drugs
Andrew Rankin Northern News Services Published Thursday, April 23, 2009
Cpl. Sean Doornbos said the arrest of the 29-year-old suspect from Tuktoyaktuk on Mackenzie Road came just minutes after the phone call. Doornbos said it's the first time he has witnessed a public tip resulting in a drug seizure since he started at the detachment nine months ago. Doornbos said the arrest speaks clearly to the power regular citizens have in stopping drug trafficking, which has been an increasing problem in Inuvik. "If we had more people willing to act in a manner like that it would increase our abilities to deal with the drug trade," he said. "Involved citizens are a powerful tool." As to the quantity of drugs confiscated, Doornbos said it's roughly equivalent to an average seizure in Inuvik. "I would consider it what to be expected in Inuvik. I wouldn't call it a substantial find." The suspect is facing one charge of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and a second charge of possession of a controlled substance. Residents can report crimes confidentially to the police by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. |
