Suspended driver jailed

SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - A suspended driver only made it a couple blocks before finding himself in trouble with the law again.

Dennis Hudson, 49, was jailed for 30 days April 7 after pleading guilty in territorial court to driving while prohibited following an incident on March 25. According to Crown prosecutor Sandy Aitken, Hudson was reported to RCMP driving a vehicle downtown by someone who knew he wasn't supposed to drive.

She said police located the vehicle and questioned Hudson. He had been prohibited from driving after a conviction for impaired driving on Oct. 6, 2008.

"He knows he's not supposed to be driving," said Aitken.

"The accused only drove a couple blocks before he was apprehended," said defence attorney Stephen Shabala.

He said Hudson had been reported to police for driving by his former girlfriend who "obviously doesn't have the same feelings for him as she once did."

Hudson, originally from Fort Smith, had moved to Yellowknife for work.

"I'm feeling very bad about what I did," Hudson told the court.

Judge Robert Gorin noted Hudson had 18 previous convictions on his criminal record.

"You need to get the message that court orders must be complied with," said Gorin.

He handed down a sentence of 30 days in jail in addition to a three-year driving prohibition, to be added onto Hudson's current driving ban. He will be eligible to drive again on Oct. 6, 2012.
