Drunk driver leaves wallet at accident scene
Cara Loverock Northern News Services Published Friday, March 6, 2009
The 21-year-old, pleaded guilty to one charge of driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. "This is a conflict matter for the Yellowknife Crown's office," said Crown prosecutor Danielle Vaillancourt. A prosecutor from Whitehorse, David McWhinnie, consequently appeared for the prosecution by telephone. He told the court that on Dec. 28, 2008 the woman had been driving while intoxicated and struck the fence and fire hydrant in front of a home belonging to a Yellowknife lawyer. McWhinnie said the woman left her wallet containing her driver's licence at the scene, but did not explain how or why the woman's wallet was left behind. RCMP arrived and found her wallet. Individuals at the scene who had witnessed the accident identified her from her driver's licence. Police went to the address listed on the licence and found the woman inside. She admitted to RCMP she had been the driver and the only occupant of the vehicle. "She has an imperfect recollection because of alcohol," said defence attorney Pat Cashman, adding the woman did not take issue with any of the facts stated by the Crown. "This is not her typical type of behaviour," Cashman said, who added that she has no previous criminal record. Judge Christine Gagnon gave the woman a $1,000 fine, a one year driving prohibition and ordered her to pay $500 in restitution for the $1,800 in damage caused to the fence at the residence. |
