Violence mars Senior Cager tournament
James McCarthy Northern News Services Published Wednesday, March 4, 2009
Police were called to the school around 7:30 p.m. to deal with a report of an assault. They arrived to find the 26-year-old male victim laying outside the gym with non-life threatening injuries. The accused had reportedly been involved in an altercation with a player from another school earlier that day and was consequently suspended from the tournament. The police were called but before they arrived the 26-year-old coach was attacked. "I didn't see it but (the victim) was saying something had popped in his knee," another coach, who asked to remain anonymous, said of the assault. "It's just a really unfortunate situation." The teenager has been charged with assault causing bodily harm. He's due in court in April to answer to the charges. Basketball NWT president Damien Healy would not comment on the matter, saying it was being dealt with by the school. According to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Yellowknifer cannot name the accused or identify the school he attends. |
